How much would a new head gasket or new block cost if cracked to replace on a 1989 Galaxy 21' bow rider?

was a boat for sale and looks great from the pictures posted otherwise, but i've never owned 1 before thanks for your info|||galaxy does not make an engine. don't buy junk. don't buy a "fix-er-upper" if you can't do the work yourself. get it???...don't do it.|||Depends on motor. I'm guessing you have an I/O. If block is cracked you can get a re manufactured long block for about $2k to $2500 and take all the accessories (intake, exhaust, starter, valve covers...) from old motor and transfer them to the new one. That's for you average GM V8. If it's a blown gasket you could probably get both sides for $20 or less, but I would have the heads planed.|||it totaly depends on what engine it has and if your able to do work yourself.I personally would stay away from the boat.More than likey it was not winterized properly,or not at all.If they neglected this what else did they neglect.

I bought a boat and all I have is the bill of sale, how do I get a title?

The guy I purchased it from will not return my calls, but I have a bill of sale that was notarized by his wife. Can I just send off for a lost title?|||OOPs (notice the bigger OOPs) We see this all the time on Yahoo Boating Answers. You didn't loose the title, you never had one. The owner (person whom is the title holder) can and is required by law in most states must turn over to the buyer a properly executed title. ( Is his wife a Notary?) He can get the title, but he, not you, must sign it! And it must be Notarized by a Notary (most Banks have one).

You should use registered letters in addition to phone calls.|||Depending on the state that you live in, having just a bill of sale will work if the boat has never had a title. (hopefully the person you got the boat from was the reg. number owner) It may have registration numbers but no title. There is a big difference in that. Some states did not require titles in the past. You may get a title by way of an abandoned/ salvaged boat by using the reg. numbers and all the documents that the state will need you to have filled out. Again, it depends on the state you live in. I have done both bill of sale and salvaged. You should look up the requirements for your state. Google "boat registration (your sate)" to find the info you need or call the phone numbers provided. I hope this helps!|||In a title state (not all states require titles) you cannot sell a boat without signing over the title. You might try the friendly approach and bring the replacement title application to him for his signature, offer to pay the fee and file the form. Or you might try a little strong arming him with selling a boat without a title is possible selling stolen goods. He might not want the publicity that bringing in the police or lawyer causes.

Next time understand the law before you make a business transaction.|||If he didn't give you the TITLE along with the BILL OF SALE then YOU CAN'T GET A TITLE.. If you bought a CAR and were too stupid to get the TITLE.. which usually includes a BILL OF SALE line on it.. then you could not title the car.. so WHY would you think you can title a boat WITHOUT A TITLE?

Has anyone heard of DRIVETIMEMOTORS.COM? They contacted me regarding my boat I have for sale.?

There are no reviews posted online, and they're requesting a $200 fee. Their pitch: "I really think we can sell your boat more quickly and at a higher price than you would otherwise get." It sounds fishy to me, but my listing has been on Craigslist for a long time, and I'm trying to think of other potential avenues. Thanks in advance!|||I smell a scam. They contacted you regarding your advertisement to ask that you advertise with them, for hundreds of dollars, I cannot find any feedback about them online, and they have a temporary office.

I looked through some of their ads, many of the cars have descriptions that don't match up with the pictures, for example the 2007 Mercedes SL. The seller of that car is named as Sunny Dua from Seattle, Washington. The seller of the 2002 Mercedes is also named Sunny Dua from Memphis, Tennessee, with same phone number.

Steer clear of this one. $200 is ridiculous for a listing, on anywhere. Try your local newspaper, or perhaps ebay.com.

Recently purchased boat had unknown motor problems. What to do?

2 weeks ago my father-in-law %26amp; husband purchased a used 21 ft fishing boat w/ a 200hp motor. It was advertised as A-1 condition.....water ready....like new....no problems....EVERYTHING works..etc etc. A very 'glowing' written advertisement and oral assessment by the seller. The boat visually appeared to be everything the seller advertised. The motor started right up, and sounded good (but as w/ many boat sales, you don't always have a body of water handy to dip the motor in, but we did use the 'muffs' - unfortunately that doesn't tell you what torque is going to do when applied)

This past weekend we took it out for it's maiden voyage ......we couldn't even get it off the trailer into the water. It wouldn't go in gear. Long story short, we took it to a reputable marina. They found shavings, and water squirting out of the lower unit, and said "There's not a gear left in this thing!" Price tag to repair- $1995.00.

Seller was baffled when first contacted about this. Haven't yet called him w/ the final cost and problem assessment, but previous conversations w/ him lead us to believe he's going to be difficult to deal with. What are our legal rights? Is there not an implied warranty? Appreciate any help with this situation.|||I can never understand why so many people believe ads when buying a car, boat, motorcycle or anything without having a FULL inspection completed. For the cost of a Marine Surveyor to inspect the boat and sign-off on the condition would have saved you the pain that you're about to experience. Also, a full test drive on the water is a MUST! You really have NO recourse if the seller isn't willing to do anything. Used vehicles and vessels are sold "As-Is", and do not have any warranty from a private seller. There's NO warranty unless you have something in writing from the seller at the time of sale. Either way, you're going to lose. The engine sounds like an outboard, so repairs or replacement are cheaper and easier than an inboard engine. Your legal Rights stopped at the time of sale when you handed over the money. It's your duty to fully inspect and accept the condition of the boat before the sale. Sorry, but you're going to learn a very expensive lesson on this one.|||The Seller has no liability. It is buyer beware.|||You have NO legal recourse...|||Well, legally you were buying a boat "as is" and may have no recourse.

Of course this is America so you go thru all the steps to get your money.

Inform the seller of the problem and what you would like as compensation.

Writing, everything in writing. If you have a phone conversation make a log!

After 30 days inform the seller you will be filing claim in small claims court, sometimes called conciliation court. And do it!

Get all your ducks in a row and show up in court prepared with ALL documentation. Letters, bills,m receipts, ads, phone logs.

Give factual testimony, don't let emotion enter in. Don't say "I think" state what you know.

Last, hope for the best.|||You do have recourse. It is in the advertisement. The seller misrepresented the condition of the motor and he did it publicly. There is no way he can get away with saying "I didn't know about that" because he claimed to know it was in "A-1 condition", "water ready", "like new" etc.

Had he just said something like. " this boat has always run perfectly for us" or, " we have never had a problem with it". He could claim it was just bad luck on the buyers part.

I have been in the boat business for many years and testified a number of times in cases of fraud and misrepresentation. You can ask him for your money back, and give him back the boat, or have the repairs done and hope that the judge requires he to reimburse you the cost of getting the boat into the condition he represented the boat as being in, But either way, this is going to end up in small claims court.|||No sarcasm intended from me.

Without having the vessel fully checked out by a reputable surveyor or boat shop or technician you had no way of telling any potential faults. Without putting the boat in the drink and trying it out over the entire speed range you have no way of telling if it performs as advertised.

It is possible the owner had no idea that any issues existed, they need the benefit of doubt unless you have incontestable proof they knowingly entered into a fraudulent transaction. You must give them the chance to come to the party and to be honest, most reasonable people will if approached in the right way. If you go in aggressively they may quite reasonably tell you to bugger off - honey catches way more flies than vinegar....

If it was a cash transaction - i.e. there were no 'duty to repair' or other written warranty conditions on the contract then it is a simple contract. Offer plus acceptance = contract, in this case it will be assumed you accepted the boat for the money as is unless you have documentation to prove otherwise, the hyperbole of the advertisement is very shaky ground to enter a courtroom on as your main evidence. You are very unlikely to ever prove the previous owner did not know the engine was defective, and your only recourse at this stage is to pay a lawyer (not seek free counsel from strangers) for legal advice before you proceed further - you will almost certainly be told there is little point in proceeding, as the burden of proof is yours - you have to completely prove your case, not the other party who merely has to say 'prove your case, you're making the accusation'.....

As said already - an expensive lesson. For less than the cost of legal fees just replace the engine or leg, and never ever buy a boat again without a full written survey by a trusted professional.

Once you get on the water you can at least enjoy the boat, at the moment it is not worth a thing until you get it going. At least give the previous owner every chance to come to the party - probably the best result you can expect is to get half the repair costs back, but even a smaller amount will be better than nothing.

Good luck.|||It's the powerhead has a serial number, and that determines what model year. The lower unit has a part number, I don't believe any of those parts are serialized.

Also note that Evinrude model and serial numbers are stamped on the engine mounting bracket, but obviously the brackets and motors can be separated. Model and serial numbers appear a couple other places on the powerhead, your mechanic will know about that I'm sure.

It's not uncommon to mate a gearcase of another model, if they are compatible, so I doubt that mismatch will be material -- if it worked you probably would be indifferent (if not a little miffed).

"AS IS - WHERE IS" is the law of the land, but it does *not* excuse fraud. A written ad stating "everything works" when clearly, everything does not work, constitutes fraud (to the best of my knowlege, see disclaimer). It would probably be civil fraud, not criminal (although I don't fully understand how to distinguish the two in all cases).

If they said "everything worked on our last outing", that would be different (unless you had evidence proving otherwise). If it said "to the best of my knowlege and belief everything works", they might have a defense.

My opinion, if you can get some kind of price adjustment from the seller (like maybe half of the repair cost), you'd be ahead over taking 'em to court.

For what it's worth, the $2,000 quote for rebuilding your gearbox is just what I'd expect.

Before approving the gearbox rebuild, be sure the mechanic does a compression test (a reputable marine tech will do it as a matter of standard procedure anyway) and other general diagnostics on the motor -- if it all checks out, you have a fine, reliable motor there.

BTW, I'd probably lead you to believe I would be difficult to work with in the initial discussions, too; after all, I don't know just yet what you're up to either -- I'd come around and do the right thing though, eventually.|||I wouldn't be to quick to think the worst of people. If your reasonable, he might be as well. I'm not at all sure that an 85 gear-case will even fit on a 95. But bottom line I'd discuss this with him, and given his representations in the ad, even an as is sale might not be as iron clad as some people think. For instance, if he recently had to replace the lower unit, and found some one to do it cheap, He might have reasonably known that fact and failed to disclose it. In my experience this sometimes ends up in small claims court, and most often the cost to make it right is shared by both parties. So, to save the time and cost of this, you and he might come to some agreement.

Or not.

Will a 40 hp motor pull a tuber on my 14 foot boat?

Theres a boat for sale that is 14 foot MFG Niagara with a 1960 Johnson Super Seahorse 40hp motor. He says it will pull the donkey out of a tuber. Anyone know if this 40 will get the job done?|||Yes easy...I used to pull skis, boards, tubers, other boats, and lots of things with a 25 hp Johnson Seahorse on a 14 ft molded mahogany boat back in the 1950's...

I am sure your 40 hp engine will do a better job|||Yes it will my exboyfriend had a john boat with a 40hp motor and we tubed all summer it was a blast just dont get the rope caught up in the motor!|||maybe with a beach start it will pull one kid... get a test drive from the seller, beats getting something that will not do what you want... offer to buy the gas !|||Think about it, that motor is old. Back when it was new, it had more power. That 40 hp is equal to to days 25hp. You can always change the prop to a lower pitch and get more pulling power. Just make sure the rpm does not go beyond 5000. The motor being in good shape could pull a tube, even a skier on 2 skies with some experience. But it will be no speed demon. Maybe 17-25mph.|||Not familiar with that boat but if it is not overly heavy, yes it will work fine. Gotta remember for safety you need two ppl in the boat. Never took a donkey tubing, what type of life jacket does he use? Just curious.|||Yes,

Something to consider though,

how much weight will determine the amount of pitch on the prop.

Probably would be best to start somewhere in the 15 pitch and work your way down to possibly to a 12 pitch.

Hope this helps|||if you are at a low elevation and have little weight in the boat and the tuber is small, then yes. I had a 1960 Glasscraft with a 35 hp Johnson and it could not pull most adults at 5000 elevation|||Yep|||why not?|||Depends on your altitude. A motor looses 3% of its horsepower for every 1000 feet above sea level. I live at 7.000 ft so your 40 HP would be a 31.6 HP here. If the boat is one of those old heavy fiberglass scows I sure wouldn't put much faith in it. Years ago I had a 14' starcraft with an Evinrude 40 HP at about sea level. Top speed was about 24 mph, we could pull a single skiier. But those tubes really need to get up to speed to skim on the water, go too slow and all they do is plow through the water.

Best idea is to go take it for a spin and see how it does.

There's a boat parked on our street in front of our condo complex, do I call to get it removed?

We are currently renting a condo in a nice area. However, someone has left their boat for sale on the streetside right where alot of us park for our complex. It's been there now for over a week and is a huge pain in the neck because everyone that lives here tries to park there. I don't know who's it is, so do I contact our property manager, or the police?|||You might try asking real nice, the person selling it to please find somewhere else to park it. The phone should be on the FOR SALE sign.|||The property manager first. If you call the police it may cause a confrontation with the owner. I would contact the property manager and only if that fails to get resolution consider further action.|||Streets are public property. As long as the boat trailer is registered, there's nothing you can do.

You can call and complain to the police, but they'll probably just tell you to grin and bear it.|||It's possible that there are regulations about what sort of vehicle can be parked on your particular street. Check with your DMV, and if the boat is in violation, feel free to call the police (non-emergency number of course)|||You can check with the police but if the trailer is currently registered then he may have as much right to park there as you. The property manager has no authority on a public street.|||Talk to the manager first. That's their responsibility to watch over the tenants. Do not get yourself involved with the police. You don't want your neighbors knowing who called.|||I'd start with the manager, since it is likely private property.|||Best thing to do is contact the property manager.|||If the parking is designated for your complex the property manager CAN make them move it. If it is not designated and it is on the street they really have no jurisdiction. You can call the police department or you can go to www.ask.com and try to find the laws in your state on this matter.|||no ........... instead of putting your rubbish in a bin go chuck it all over their boat im sure they will move it then lol|||You would need to call the property manager first. The street issue depends on a couple of things. 1)It may not be a "public street" if it is on condo property and may fall under a condo associatioin of rules like a home association has rules. 2)If it is a true public street, it can depend on city ordinance as well.

Check those things out first, go to the property manager. If that doesn't work and it's parked near a fire hydrant, etc., then you can try the police, but make sure to call the non-emergency number listed for your area. Don't call 911.|||The police or the property manager. And if the property manager is unwilling or unable to assist you then call the police. Some people are so inconsiderate. Good luck and God bless****|||Call both or just do nothing if you want to be nice.

How fair offshore could you go with this boat before it run out of fuel?

http://www.boatpoint.com.au/boats-for-sale/boatdetails.aspx?R=8609458|||This is similar to my current motor yacht. Your maximum range is 889 miles at 90% engine efficiency.

That would be calculated with the engines running at 2100 RPM's which is around the "Sweet Spot" of the engines. But the general boating fuel rule is 1/3 out, 1/3 back and 1/3 reserve. So your MAXIMUM range going out would be 296 miles.

I cruised my yacht up here to Alaska from SF in California and got those numbers. But on the Helm Info Center should be a gauge with a fuel flow meter. That meter will display your actual fuel burn rate in gallons per hour per engine, so use that to calculate your actual safe distance.|||If (and that is a very big IF) you want to believe Horizon's own review of this vessel, it has a cruising range of 800 miles at 10 knots speed. Now mind you, 10 knots is "half" the marked "cruising speed" of 19 knots, and they list the boat's "top speed" at 25 knots.

So, if you go slow... (as most sailboats will make 10 knots) you could go offshore about 250 to 300 miles, return to shore, and have just about enough fuel left to cruise back to your Marina or boat dock.

At cruising speed of 19 knots, you will probably limit your offsore distance to 100 miles, as twice the RPMs burns a little more then twice the fuel.

The link below (under source) will take you to a downloadable spec sheet with a review, and cruise range.

Happy %26amp; Safe Boating,

SHOULD I BUY A BOAT, "WITHOUT TITLE"?

i live in maryland. i see a lot of boats ads in the papers for boats for sale "without title or registrations", what is the risk of buying one of these boats and is it legal to sell one. Also the trailers are not registered either. what should i do?|||Look up your fisheries authority (Wildlife Dept, Natural Resources, whatever they call themselves). If boats in Maryland are titled, don't *DO NOT* buy an untitled boat. When you get ready to register it, you won't be able to. You have to find the title holder of record and get a sworn statement.

Without a current registration sticker, the game warden will be on you like flies on a rotted gar. You'll be stuck with a boat you can't use.

In my state the outboard motor has a separate title, separate from the hull title.|||Boats in Maryland require a title. But our neighbor state of Delaware requires only registration. If you buy a boat that was registered in DE you need a bill of sale and the last registration card from the owner.

Maryland also requires trailers to be registered and tagged. Delaware does too, so the trailer would have a title.

If they are from Maryland and do not have a title then something is wrong. Too many good deals around to take a chance at buying a stolen vessel.

|||Depends on the laws of Maryland. In my state, all motorized boats and sail boats over a certain length have to be registered, row boats and sail boats under the length requirement don't have to be registered.

Trailer registration is similar. If a trailer and it's load ( Gross Weight ) is over 1700 lbs. it must have a registration and license. Under 1700 lbs does not.

so check with the State of Maryland and see if you need a title.|||You could buy it but your risking getting caught by the police on the road(for the trailer) and the rangers out at the lakes for not having your title. They can jump to conclusions that you stole it.

Or even if you try to register it(which you have to if you want to use it) they're going to ask you for your title I believe.

Good luck!|||I would be careful... AND I would contact the Maryland Department of Motor Vehicles before purchasing such a boat. http://mva.state.md.us/

In California, it is a probable sign that the owner hasn't paid the taxes and registration (often for YEARS), and the purchaser will be liable for the back-dated fees.

ALSO, there is the risk that it could be stolen. I had a friend who bought a "great, cheap" sailboat, a terrific deal, until the owner found the boat... yep, it was stolen, and my friend was lucky not to go to jail.

Why is eBay's car/boat sales so fail? or is it seller asking for too much?

so, i've been watching alot of car and boat sales on eBay, i'd say 100% of the car or boat sales that has 'Reserve' price, will have auction ended as reserve not met. and eBay charges $10 extra for listing with reserve price.

on top of that even those sold with NO RESERVE, the seller end up re-listing the item few days after the auction ends, usually cause buy buyer changes mind. and things like that is costing the seller a fortune in eBay fees. as u know, every seller on eBay wants people to bid to buy, not bid to 'have a chance that someone will come to inspect' today, selling car or boat on eBay is like paying redicious amount of fees, for a 'CHANCE' that the winning bidder will come to inspect, and hopefully he will pay. no1 bid to buy.

why 99% of the reserve sales cannot meet reserve? is it just they are asking for too much? or people are just tight and expect to buy brand new car/boat with $10k ? ? ?|||Some people list their car just to get a free car fax like report. Its free to list.

Ebay is never going to be a thriving marketplace for big ticket items.|||Your right, there is a lot of no sales on e bay , both non payers/false bidders, and not reaching reserve.

Many people look at identical cars advertised buy car sales or retailers, and believe that they can advertise their cars for the same price, forgetting that retailers pay tax, give warranty, and must make a profit to stay in business, private sales should be 2/3rds to 1/2 of retailers price.

They also forget that this is an auction, buyers are taking the vehicle faults and all, so must be cheaper than locally advertised to cover the risk.

People are greedy, we want as much as we can get for our used vehicles, forgetting that they have de- valued since we purchased them.|||What's wrong with a reserve price? If the reserve isn't met, you get your money back from the listing.

And I've listed plenty of cars on there, to have no buyer show up with their money. So I've had to relist it.

Most times than not, it's the buyer that is so fail. Not the sellers.

Now, there are also a lot of people that list their reserve at the same as their buy it now. Can you blame them?

Let's say I have a car that I want $10k for. I'm not setting my reserve below that. I don't care if it reaches 9,000, I want 10k.

Hence the reserve.

Can i register a boat with just a bill of sale?

I bought a boat from a dealer and accepted delivery from him. I gave him a separate check for the taxes which he was supposed to then register the boat in my name. Turned out the temporary registration he gave me was a fake and now he is in prison for many deals like this. His business is closed and now i have a boat that i cannot register.|||SeattleSailor is being too nice... "discuss your problems with your state registering department" my ash... If I were you I would be at my attorney's office first thing in the morning to make sure I don't get arrested for possession of stolen property.

Then, I would have him take care of getting the title and registration.

If you were in Texas, the TDPS would already have taken possession of the boat in question. In addition, you would probably be out on bail.

Down here... you can steal their car... but you best not mess with their boat or their pickup. lol|||you will need to discuss your problems with your state registering department. bring lots of documentation with you including the facts regarding the case against the seller and his business, your bill of sale, fake registration etc. since fraud was involved by the dealer, there is a chance that the seller did not have ownership of the boat, or that the boat could even be stolen.

hope this works out well for you

Need Homework Help FAST! Spending a million dollars...?

OK this sounds weird but i need to know something really expensive (around $700,000) or a few things that add up to $700,000 for a school project. I am working on a Computer Apps project. I have to find out how to spend a million dollars, and I've already spent a little over $200,000. It's harder than you think. Rules: It has to be legal for a 13-year old to own in the state of GA (no cars, houses, or boats), sales tax counts, get as close to a million as you can without going over.|||Sense your doing this project for school I would say find out how many desks you have total in your school, how many computers, how many different text books for each subject in your school, and how many lockers are in your school and buy all of them new for your school and this should knock out your $700,000 really fast. You can add other items to my list of things that your school needs if needed to get to the $700,000.

Registering boat trailer in my name with bill of sale, no title?

I bought a boat trailer and boat. I have a separate bill of sale for each. I didn't realize there was a separate title for the trailer. Now I don't know how to get the trailer registered in my name. All I have is the old registration and a bill of sale. Any suggestions?|||If your jurisdiction requires a title for a boat trailer and you have no title, then you must go back to your seller and get one. It is HIS responsibility to provide you with one. It is your responsibility to get it from the seller before you fork over the cash. A bill of sale without a title is not worth the paper it is written on.|||I ran into this problem with a 78 camaro , Take your bill of sale and serial number of trailer to your county tax office , You may have to pay the taxes on the trailer for however many years its been since they have been paid but once you do they should allow you to file for a lost title , Worked for me and worth a shot . good luck !

Who is eligable for the $20 billion fund for the oil spill?

I am in the boating business. I sell boats for a living. I am hearing more and more customers saying that they are waiting to buy a new/used boat because of the oil spill. I live on the west central coast of Florida and this oil spill is now hurting my income just like its hurting the gulf coast fisherman. Is any of this $20 billion available for the boat retailers/Sales persons etc. I have been talking with many boat sales persons around the gulf coast and they are all in agreement with this. Please let me know your thoughts.|||You would be eligible if you have a loss of income due to the spill, but the burden of proof would be on you. First, you would have to have have financial statements from previous years documenting an established income higher than you made this year. Then BP will compare your drop in income to the drop in sales in the boating industry in general. We are in a major recession and boats are large discretionary items that get cut from budgets in times of economic trouble. Many of your customers can't afford to buy a boat now but don't want to admit it, so they blame it on the spill. Good luck.|||Probably down the line, when the oil gets to your shore.

Unfortunately, indirect effects don't qualify (ie, people waiting on a payout).

Verbal contract for sale of boat?

I have this vebal agreement over the past 3 years for commission on the sale of my friends boat. I was promised 10k if i put an ad on a site/sites and sent/received emails /calls and conversed with prospective buyers on is behalf. Over the past 3 years i have made numerous calls and sent many many photos and emails. And have lined up many buyers. Just last week the boat sold . Signed Blank Bill of Sale at Boat Show, What Do I Do If we Don’t want to Buy from Seller Anymore?

My husband and I went to a boat show and made the decision to finally upgrade our boat to a 2011 Supra. However, since we didn’t like the color of the boat that they were selling at the boat show we decided to just order one that was specific to our likings. To get the boat show pricing the sales rep made my husband sign a blank “Bill of Sale” from Supra. He said that he would fill in the form once we emailed him exactly what we wanted on the boat.

It’s been about two weeks since the boat show. Here are the issues that we have had so far.

*Got approved for the loan, but their loan provider was requiring us to shell out 20% down. Which to be honest, we don’t have $12K liquid at this time. My husband and I discussed downgrading the boat to a smaller size and getting rid of some options to make the price of the boat go down. We asked for a detailed list and new price on the boat. (still haven’t got)

*Then my husband got us approved for the full loan amount with lower interest through USAA. So we wanted to go ahead and add the options that we wanted and then some more extras, like spare tire, under water lights, etc. We told the rep that “we came into some money” and that we would like a new price on the boat with all the extra options that we wanted to add, knowing that we wouldn’t be going through their creditor. (still haven’t got it)

*By now we have asked the rep through several emails and phone conversations for a detailed printout of the sales price. The rep has been very evasive and very inconsistent with the prices.

It’s now to the point where we don’t want to do business with this marina anymore. My question is, if we signed a blank bill of sale (with no money down), are we then responsible for the cost of the boat?

**Note: I’m not looking for answers like “you are screwed!!!”, “Hate to be you!”, “You are dumb!” I’m looking for legal advice. And if we are responsible if we decide to not buy this boat from them?|||You have not signed a purchase contract. You only agreed to purchase a boat at a specified price. Until you have signed a full purchase and disclosure contract, you are not obligated to anything. Tell the salesman to forget it, you don't like the way he keeps jerking you around. If he balks, tell him you will buy elsewhere. If he does not produce the results, take your business elsewhere.|||I think you already know the answer to this question.......seek professional legal advice! Although most of us here at YA boats try to help all with their boating problems, contract law can be anything but simple, and there is no substitute for sound legal advice from a trusted attorney.|||hate to be you..u are sooo screwed..OK got that done now

1 the singing was a bad move..but it appears it was used for loan Application..

2 you are NOT responsible or forced to buy a boat,,,a contract is an agreement between 2 party's..there is NO agreement

3 you have no money down to fight over...send a registered letter to boat/marina guy stating you are not buying a boat from him and severing all business dealings,,be polite and firm...

THERE...fell better..learn anything??|||This is actually very simple. Send an email saying that you no longer want to continue with the purchase of any boat. Follow that up with a registered letter. End of story.

Signing a blank bill of sale, or even a "purchase agreement" that does not specify exactly what you are purchasing, and the exact price, nullified the purchase. The dealer might be in the middle between you and the Builder who might not have his pricing established for the 2011 model of the boat you want. But, at this point I think the communications have broken down to the point it's best if both sides just walk away.

Do boat manufactures make yachts differently for sale in various countries like cars?

Do boat manufactures like sunseeker or Princess make yachts differently for sale in various countries like cars? It seems like a silly question but I thought I should ask...|||It's not likely to be any different. The difference may only be in the EU Approval process when a vessel is built in a European country. Boats built here in America are commonly shipped to most European countries without any issues. However, there are differences of some sort or a lack of seeking the proper US Coast Guard Approvals since there are "Restrictions" in place for some yachts coming towards the USA. Many are labeled "Not for Sale or Charter in U.S Waters". My current motor yacht is Italian Naval Architecture and design, but is built and sold here in America.|||hell yeah|||Good question...

Actually, I don't know any that have done that in the last 40 years. Typically, production boats of the same type and purpose will be the same world wide. However, Chris-Craft once built narrow boats which were sold exclusively in the UK, but they stopped that practice when they moved from one at a time boat building - into assembly line production of their boats.

So, sorry. . . a Bayliner is still a Bayliner - even in the UK.

There are however, many boat manufacturers in many countries that do not "actively" promote or sell their boats in other countries.

John

What is osmosis? can your boat sink if it has this?

descriptions of boats for sale often say there is no osmosis. How serious is this problem on fibreglass boats? Does it occur naturally and get worse to the point that the boat would sink? What can be done to prevent or reverse it?|||have a read here.............

http://www.nautica.it/info/maint/osmosi_鈥?/a>|||Osmosis is a breakdown of the outer skin of the fibre glass,i know it is below the water line, but not sure if it breaks down above the water line aswell.it can be treated by specialists|||Any thing that sits in water absorbs it, this is osmosis. Its not the end of the world when the GRP absorbs water depends on the extent. We had a princess 40 with slight osmosis the boat yard qouted 拢5k to sort it. When the chap came to buy it the surveyor said there was not alot of point in doing it as it was only slight and would come back over time any way.

Basically water gets behind the gel coat and it looks like the bottom of the boat has blisters (which it has) water blisters. Wooden boats dont get this they are supposed to absorb the water to remain water tight, its just GRP ones, and eventually they nearly all do. Just some take a lot longer than other.|||Osmosis is the leakage of a liquid through a membrane..No osmosis means it is water tight.|||Have to say i disagree with some of the answers above.

Osmosis is not a salt water issue. ( fibreglass narrow boats suffer from it too )

Its not caused by water getting through pinholes in the gel coat - that is a symptom

Osmosis is caused by the incorrect mixing of the resins used to make fibreglass. It results in a reaction that produces acetic acid. This forms pockets that expand, creating bubbles with a very weak film that is easliy pierced.

If you poke a hole in an osmosis bubble, it smells like vinegar - acetic acid - try it.

You need to root out all the weak bits, thoroughly dry them, and repair them to gain full strength again.

Eventually, osmosis can cause a boat to take on water as the bubbles join up and create a "channel" from the outside to the inside. This will first be seen by "damp" patches on the inside of the hull.

The first signs are small marks on the outer hull, little more than "stipples". A bad case will show large bubbles that are easy to push in and out by hand, probably breakign them - they go very brittle. Even these are not the end of the world, they can be repaired but its a dry-dock job.|||When we first made fibreglass boats we thought that the gelcoat (the outer layer) was waterproof. Turned out it was not neccessarily the case. If the gelcoat layer had a few pinholes then water could get in under the gelcoat. As water cools it expands so after a few winters (even if the boat was taken out of the water over winter) the water behind the pinholes expanded to make the gelcoat bubble.

Please note here that this problem does'nt effect the waterproof integrity of the hull, so the boat would not sink - but it looks really bad.

The cure is to use a special grinder (must keep the bits out of the atmosphere and especially out of your lungs) to grind off the old gelcoat and replace it with modern (waterproof) gelcoat. The liquid gelcoat is spead on the stripped hull and 'bagged' with polythene to make a super smooth new finish to your hull. As you can imagine, this is quite an expensive operation - but time is money and the end results are fantastic and permanent, so if you find a boat with osmosis get a quote for the stripping and replacement and knock this of the asking price of the boat ('cos the owner will end up paying for it sooner or later).

Hope this helps Bigpathome.|||For 80's Kid...

Osmosis..."the passage of water or other solvents through a semipermeable membrane"

In this case the membrane is the boat's gelcoat and descriptive term is correct.

---ya putz.

Blisters in the gelcoat below the waterline. A saltwater and freshwater (with weak gelcoat)environment issue. The salt molecules migrate into the gelcoat and draw water into the gelcoat. The water pops the gelcoat. Freezing cycles worsen the condition. You get bigger bubbles and blisters.

I agree with Micheal H below about ratios of gelcoat mixes in the past...and acetic acid bubbles. And yes...a path can form to the inside of the boat...and yes, in the strictest sense...if your batteries are dead and your pumps don't work and you're a MORON....your boat CAN sink!!!

The boat gains weight...the underlying laminate can also get infected in very bad cases...leads to leaks and weak spots.

You gotta grind them out....or strip/peel the hull....thoroughly wash/flush with fresh water....thoroughly dry out...then coat with Epoxy or Vinylester to waterproof the hull.

Note also: that Vacuum bagging does not happen on hull exteriors much or at all...that's a fresh build/ molding and lay-up technique. Nor would vacuum bagging with poly give a perfectly smooth finish....not a chance.

The epoxy/vinylester treatment is highly recommended from factory new before launching.|||Michael H has is dead right. It's a layup problem when the hull was first built, but you don't see the problem until years later.

One thing nobody has really mentioned is that osmosis is a COSMETIC problem. A boat with osmosis will not sink, nor does osmosis make it structurally unsound. The problem is that it looks unsightly, it will only get worse and it's pretty expensive to put right (unless you do it yourself). A boat with osmosis will be hard to sell because of the above, but it's not unseaworthy and it won't sink.

Osmosis can happen in almost any GRP hull and just because there's no evidence now doesn't mean you'll never see any. Having said that, if the hull is at least 10-years old and has never shown any evidence of osmosis then it's unlikely to do so now (though not impossible).

When you buy a GRP boat one of the things the surveyor will do for you is give you a feel for the moisture content of the hull. This gives you a rough idea of whether you might suffer from osmosis in the future. (A wet hull generates more osmotic pressure than a dry one).

Don't buy a boat that shows osmosis - it'll cost you a LOT of money to correct. But don't loose any sleep over osmosis after you've bought your boat!|||I know what osmosis is, and I've never heard of people using this term when referring to boats. Many people who don't know what they're talking about use useless terms and over-use nautical terms to make it sound like they have a clue. My advice is don't even deal with people that are talking about the osmosis of a boat, because something is not right, either with them or their boat. DOES THE BOAT LEAK? This is a normal way to discuss the seaworthyness of a vessel. Osmosis occurs in living cell membranes of plants and animals, WTF are they talking about?!

Where can I find a free online printable bill of sale for a boat?

www.lawdepot.com should do the trick for you.|||DMV onliine under the vessel section forms.|||The answers you have already received are good but! Get the document Notarized for added security, it only costs a couple of $.|||You might find one if you google enough but really not required.

Just write one up that states "sold-one "year, make, model" boat for "x amount of dollars" AS IS! Sign your name and have the buyer sign with both of you getting a copy.

The key element is "AS IS"!!! That relieves you of the buyer coming back for his money for any reason! He is buying the boat in the condition it is and agrees to by signing his name on the bill of sale clearly marked "AS IS"!|||Just go into Word, go to open a new document, and search the MS website for a bill of sale.|||you don't even need a form...just use word. yitle it bill of sale. put in both parties names and addresses, the make model and year of the boat. Hours on the engine. Date. Sign and your done.

Sale of a boat, where does it go on 1040 and what can I deduct?

Its personal property, a boat cost me 10k several years ago. Sold it for 3k but also spent another 1k in selling costs (including 500 in property taxes). How do I report this and what is deductible? all of it, some of it? WHere does it go on the 1040?|||You don't report it - a loss on a personal item isn't deductible. Not ANY of it.|||Unless you used your boat, mainly for business, it is considered personal property. And you can not deduct the losses from personal property. Sorry, you are out of luck.

However, you can deduct the taxes, in the year you paid them.|||Dear MR: Personal property losses are not deductible but had you sold it for a profit it would have been a taxable gain. Guess who makes the rules!!

May have been better to have donated the thing.

What's with boat sales????

We have a gorgeous 1985 38' Chris Craft Catalina for sale that is fully loaded and marina maintained.this boat is immaculate inside and updated neutral coloured interior. It's a condo on the water with berber carpet, wrap-around pullout sofa, counter bar and stools, full size refrigerator..king bed. in aft....and the list goes on. It is by far, the cleanest and in the best condition of any of the other 38' C.C.Cs, The problem, is, it doesn't seem to matter what the condition the other 38'CCCs 1985 are in Prices are all over the board from $39.000.00 to 129,000.00 with no rhyme or reason not reflecting their condition at all. We've lowered our price drastically because of the dollar. It is priced very fair, What's going on with the sales agents, Can't they advise their clients what their boat is really worth?????

Sorry just need to vent!!!!|||It is not the boat it is the near $4 per gallon gas price on the water.

Let's face it, boats don't get the best economy.

Then add to that, most buyers just look at price and not quality. That is why Bayliner is the best selling boat. They have both a low price and cheaply made boat. Where they do spend the money is in highering good designers.

-tcw|||i agree boat sales are nuts try to find a small fishing boat for 3000 dollars you cant just junk|||A friend of ours sold his boat on e-Bay and said he got a very fair price for her.

Draft, loaded %26amp; when empty.

Hull - copper sheathed or wooden.

Someone in India is interested.|||I hear ya...sold many boats. And if you're in Canada there's some lazy brokers in the Toronto area.

Be real...eliminate the sellers asking pie-in-the-sky speculative prices. Like trying to recoup the money you spent on a pool at your house...not likely to happen.

Consider refurbishments an act to bring your yacht to the forefront in terms of appeal and survey passing....not the top of the list in price.

Gorgeous boats...and I'm sure your Baby is worth the world to you...that said....

I think all the Money for a nice Mid 80's CC 38 Cat is $59-69K for super nice because I'll seriously consider the ones down around 39K with a budget for repairs and refurbishing.

Some guy who may have repowered with big blocks or diesels and repainted...etc...etc is still just dreaming at 120K....you know...like new at a third of the price...blah,blah..

Try to get financing for a 25yr old boat if you don't have the cake...likely a secured line of credit...then you come out from under the ether and look at newer with longer terms on conventional financing. Tough game.

And you don't even want to know what I can buy one on www.motors.ebay.com for...(when they're listed)...ship up here(near Toronto)...clean and refurbish it. I'd have HUGE equity.

So...I understand your frustration...honestly, and I love Catalinas. You just can't speculate if you seriously want to sell it...59-69K is it... or lower! Otherwise, continue to lavish her with the love and care you have for all these years.

There two fresh water examples in the Toronto area ...one is 79 the other is 89 and they have been on the market for 3 years or more in this range. Clearly nobody wants to pay that price. A broker calls this a dead listing/unrealistic seller and he doesn't get excited about it or market it agressively. They don't even show it or hold the buyer/prospects hand...they call you and let you show it yourself. Sound familiar?

An overpriced listing is a waste of advertising money and energy. They park it occassionally in the magazines or on the internet and forget about it.

For the record...across 15 boats, I have never lost money. It's ludacris to say you never get your money out of boats. You have to buy them right and perform much of your own work....cheque writers always lose. It's better to do your own work and gain an intimate knowledge of your vessel and systems.

Good luck.|||The bottom line in selling boats is that there are far more boats for sale than there are buyers. It is always a buyer's market. A boat, like everything else, is worth only what someone is willing to pay you for it. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter how beautiful it is, or how well maintained, or how up-to-date, or how nicely refurbished - buyers will always look for the best deal, not necessarily the best boat. For most people it is a luxury they can just barely afford, sometimes cannot really afford, so they have to go with the best price. If the boat needs work, they can do that on their own time and nickel, bit by bit.

Sales agents want to make as much money as possible from a sale. They don't mind if the listing price starts way too high - they have other boats that are listed and will sell while waiting for someone who doesn't know any better and maybe has more money than brains to pay too much for a boat on a whim. I saw an agent encourage a friend of mine to list a boat for much more than he wanted to get for it - for actually about 60% more than he wanted to get for it - because if it sold at that list price it meant more money for the agent. That was in August, and the boat is still not sold. If he had listed it for about what he wanted to get, it would probably be sold now, because it is one of those basic boats, good for beginners, that would usually sell quickly.

I have seen beautiful boats, well maintained, with a fair asking price, listed for years. You cannot get back the money you put into a boat. No matter what you do, the boat is still the age that it is, and the market is still what it is. I sold a 35 Ericson not long ago for about half what I thought it was worth, but I realized that it was worth that much only to me. Most likely the people asking the outlandish prices for their boats will still own them a year from now, but the people willing to bite the bullet and sell for probably considerably less than they are asking, but still for a reasonable amount in terms of the market, will make a deal.

I hope you have good luck in selling your boat. Sometimes the right buyer is just around the corner.|||According to the ABOS Blue Book, low book value for your boat is $50,400 and high book value is $61,300. It is slightly higher if it is diesel powered. I am in the boat sales industry and consistently use this book as a guide. I believe it to be fair and accurate.

These values reflect the boat being in good running condition. If there are ANY repairs, etc. that the boat needs, you must subtract that dollar amount from the value of the boat.

When listing your boat with a broker, they might convince you to accept a dollar amount closer to the low book value because there is a greater chance of it selling. As you know, the market is really not good for selling right now, so just be realistic.

Good luck!

I doubt if you will get any interest here since I don't even know what state your in and without a PRICE - your ad is worthless!

A 18 foot boat is HARDLY a "ski boat" and 180 horses is very minimal. Whats with the "new engine"? And generally when a boat has a new engine, I would STAY FAR AWAY FROM IT. You better have a GOOD PRICE for what your trying to sell and this monkey business your trying to pull here is not getting it!

How do I restore a wood boat?

I found an old 22ft. wood shrimp boat for sale and needs a lot of work. Some of the wood needs replacing. What kinds of wood should I use, what do i seal it with, HOW DO I MAKE IT SEA WORTHY????|||If it a good deal it worth fixing. It can get expensive. Doing most of the work helps cut costs. Many people love buying these old boats and restoring them, both for a hobby and of course pleasure. I would try to use the same wood that is already on the boat. Hull wood can be may types. I have seen Oak, Redwood, types of spruce etc. it a long list of regular and exotic woods. This something you need to research and talk to others with wood boats. Search the Inet for Restoration Sites and Forums so you can question people.

Use high quality bolts, Stainless or Bronze/Brass. You may see on the hull where bolts rust through the paint, that a good sign they need checked/replaced before you paint. If the hull wood shows soft spots then you need to look inside and check other wood. Some can be hard to get to and may require gutting the inside.

In short, the best way to think of this; "You are going to build a boat. Instead of using boat plans you have templates already provided. Copy what need to be replaced and check out the engines for rebuilding before you do cosmetic work".

There so many good web-sites that will help you learn everything from bending a board to paint.

Good luck!|||with a good motor that should sell fast and yes ebay would do you good!|||it is against the rules of Y-Answers to be posting for sale ads.

Try E-Bay.|||I believe Fred is right ie., advertisin', however if your post stays on ya' just might be beatin' the system ;)...

How much did Abby Sunderland's "2001 Open-40, Solo" boat cost?

Can't find out anywhere. Just looking for a ballpark estimate or maybe a link to listings of the same boat for sale. Here are the boat details according to her website:

Designer: Jutson Yacht design, Australia

Builder: A.S.A. Yachts PTY, Australia

Model: Open 40, solo

Built: 2001

It also has a lot of custom sails, rigging, and electronics.|||Sorry, but I don't understand why people feel a need to give answers on things they have no idea about...

Abby's Dad, is a boatwright, and a lifelong sailor... No way in this world would he pay $500,000 for a boat. Even for his daughter to sail around the world - because it is not necessary, and a foolish expense. Safer blue water boats can be purchased for much-much less.

So, know from that, this "experienced" boater would find a solid, safe, comfortable boat at a real deal. And that is just what he did.

Abby's (9 year old) Open 40 cost him only $90,000.

Abby's "Wild Eyes" (by the way) was formerly Alan Paris's BYC Velocitya. On which Alan sailed into the history books as the first Bermudian and the 125th person ever, to sail around the world alone.

While "BTC Velocitya" is a Jutson 40 design, it was built by John Sayer who told me (when he was building it back in 2001) that he was using a female mold, Divinycell foam, FGI boat epoxy Resin, and a mixture of Kevlar and "E" glass stitched cloth. John built the vessel for Alan at a cost of $300,000. Now mind you, that was just the price for the shell boat and mast. All the goodies and extras had to be paid for by Alan.

So, "Wild Eyes" was indeed a good deal even though she is a nine year old boat. However, there was an awful lot of new "stuff" added to Wild Eyes after they bought her - including the new updated electronics, and a paint job (of which I am sure the sponsors paid for).

Happy %26amp; Safe Boating,

John|||From what I have read, It cost $200,000. This includes electronics and everything.|||That specific sailboat sells at around $400,000 dollars. I am sure she had ramped up electronics and accessories on there so that raises the price tag more as well. So we can estimate, without knowing the total amount of extras, it to be @ $500,000
