1989 Maxum boat for sale?

A guy is selling a 1989 21ft Maxum open bow boat with a 3.0 mercruiser engine in it. He says the body of the boat is in Great condition besides some soft spots on the floor and the engine runs good. He does not know how many hours on the engine but it has only been in freshwater. The boat comes with the trailer. He is selling it for $1,900? Does anyone know if the 1989 3.0 mercruiser is reliable? He says he has done nothing but take wonderful care of the engine. Just want to know if this would be a waste of my money?|||Go see the boat for yourself. If it looks ok, get it surveyed by a reputable person. If it still seems good, buy it.|||OK, here is my Monday morning cynic talking.

Every seller says they have taken great care of their boat. My gut is to ask for maintenance records.

There may be a hourmeter on the boat and it is hidden. On my boat the true hourmeter is on the port side of the engine on a bulkhead just under the rolled up canvas top. Spend some time crawling around exploring and you might find a hourmeter.

Best of luck.|||That's a 20 year old boat so it's a tough call to make. He has no idea of how many hours are on the engine and the flooring has soft spots? Does he at least have a ships log showing the maintenance done on her? If not...pass it up for you could be looking at a whole lot more than $1900 in repairs.
